Many on the surface world remember a rather bland young merman that was a founding member of the JLA, yet below the waters that cover two-thirds of the surface of his planet he is rightfully seen as the monarch of those waters. Experience has molded Orin from the inexperienced loner to the majestic warrior king that his subjects both fish and mammal hold in awe.
Aquaman is often seen as a loner but he takes his time forming friends, a group that includes a long standing friendship with Wonder Woman, the shared experiences of the former sidekick Tempest and a burgeoning respect for Conner Hawke the latest Green Arrow.
Aquaman has fought gods for his right to be protector of the seas, he has paid with blood for enemies made and has lost his way in the difficult choices that rulers must make. Yet it is impossible to keep him down, his heritage as the descendent of Kordax and son of Atlan give him a connection with the oceans that even he is only now becoming aware of.
Now his is the Head Coach for the Demo Dolpins.
The last surviving member of a race of amphibious humanoids which lived during the Devonian age, the Gill-man (as christened by Dr. Thompson) originally dwelled in a lagoon located in a largely unexplored area of the Amazon Rainforest. The creature was known to the natives, as the captain of the boat Rita mentioned local legends of a "man-fish".
After having found the fossilized remains of another Gill-man, a marine biology institute funded an expedition to the Amazon in order to find more remains. Though the Gill-man reacted violently to the intrusion, he developed a soft spot for the team's only female member, Kay and repeatedly tried to abduct her, going as far as building a makeshift dam to prevent their boat from escaping. After having killed numerous members of the expedition, the creature took Kay to his underwater lair, where he was tracked down by the remaining survivors and riddled with bullets. The creature sank into the depths of the lagoon, where he barely survived.
After he fully recovered, the Gill-man joined the Demo Dolphins and has taken over the youth development program. He initially terrified the children but has now earned their affection.
Poseidon is one of the original Olympian deities, born of Cronus and Rhea and older brother to Zeus and Hades. Like his siblings, he was imprisoned in Cronus's stomach to prevent the rise of a king who could challenge Cronus's rule. When Zeus escaped his confinement and freed the other Olympians, Poseidon stood as Zeus's right hand in the Titanomachy, the war between the Olympians and the Titans. When Zeus stood triumphant at the end of the war, the three sons of Cronus knew that the time had come to choose a new Lord of the Universe.
Lots were cast for the role, and Zeus, the middle brother, came out the winner. To him went mastery of the skies and lordship over all things, including the gods. To Hades, the youngest brother, went dominion over the dead and the Underworld. But to Poseidon came Lordship over all water and control over earthquakes, as well as power second only to Zeus's own. He found that he didn't mind. Let Zeus have the headache of being King of the Gods. It just meant more time for Poseidon to find and develop his own interests.
Luckily those interests include summer league swimming and we are pleased to have Poseidon returning for his third year as Assistant Coach. His son Percy is also a Demo Dolphin swimmer in the U12 age group.
